The most representative grape variety grown in this area, is the Groppello. It is considered a rare red grape variety which is cultivated only in Valtènesi-Garda Classico in the beautiful hills west of Lake Garda.
This grape is the basis for all red wines and rosés, including of course the eponymous Groppello and Chiaretto, the pearl of this wine region.
Groppello in its red version gives delicate and elegant wines, smooth and spicy wines with hints of fruity blackberry. The Chiaretto, based on Groppello, is unique for its fresh taste and the hints of small wild strawberries.
In February 2012 the new D.O. Valtènesi based on Groppello has been proclaimed. It includes a red – the Valtènesi - and the Valtènesi Chiaretto. The other wines produced in the area are Garda Classico Chiaretto, Garda Classico Rosso and Rosso Superiore, Groppello and Groppello Riserva. The white versions are Garda Classico Bianco (Riesling) and San Martino (Tocai).
The range of the wines is great to satisfy any pairing with the local food: fish, meat or pasta.
